Terry N. Ford graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University in 1974 with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education.  After four years as a bilingual first-grade teacher in the Dallas public schools, she worked with parents and another teacher to open a school for eight children - sharing donated space with a neighborhood methadone clinic - in response to concerns of neighborhood parents who saw their children falling through the cracks in their neighborhood school, branded “failures” as early as second grade.  For the past four decades, Terry and her team have worked relentlessly to implement the philosophy of “Start Young, Involve Parents”.

Hello families,

My name is Sylvie Fitzgerald. I am originally from Togo, a French speaking small country in West Africa.  I joined Lumin East Dallas Community School in 2006, as a parent of two children who are now 18 and 20 years old.

I received a bachelor’s degree in communications/Advertising from the Universita’ Per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy and a master’s degree in the Humanities from SMU in Dallas.  I also hold AMI Montessori certifications at the 0-3 and 3-6 levels from the Montessori Institute of North Texas. Before taking on the role of School Director at Lumin EDCS, I worked for 15 years in Montessori environments as a classroom assistant, classroom guide, parent educator, Montessori school owner and administrator.

While I have had many work experiences in marketing and public Relations before becoming a Montessori teacher, working with children and their parents is what I enjoy the most. I firmly believe that all children can learn if we start young and provide them with an optimal learning environment. This is why I took the Montessori training for the 0-3 years and taught at that level for over a decade.

I love to dance and am a fanatic of Zumba. I also enjoy learning new languages, bike riding, reading and traveling with my family. My door is always open. Please stop by any time. I am looking forward to getting to know your family!

My journey at Lumin Education began 30 years ago!  I have served in many areas throughout the school during my time here. I have spent time in the Primary classroom, as well as the Infant/Toddler classroom.  I have also been a Parent Educator.

Now a little about my personal life outside of school.  I’m happily married to my high school sweetheart, Enrique, and together we have three beautiful daughters: Elaine, Evelyn, and Elyssia. All three daughters attended Lumin Education and I truly enjoyed their time there. In my spare time, I love to spend time with my family, especially my one and only granddaughter, Yselle. I love quick runs to Starbucks, trying new restaurants, going on vacations, and most importantly, spending time with my whole family.

Hello everyone!
My name is Brenda Canas born and raised in Dallas, TX. I have been married for 13 years and have two
daughters who attend Lumin. Our oldest daughter has just started her first year in Primary and our
youngest kindergarten. We are also very excited to welcome our son next month. For 10 years I worked
as a personal assistant and enjoyed it very much once I became a mother, I knew this was not for me.
When my husband visited the school campus and learned more about Montessori, and felt like family,
we knew this was for us. My daughters started school in August 2021, and I decided to join Lumin as well
and it was the best decision of all. I'm the elementary art teacher at Lumin Lindsley Park Community
School and I love it. I also help in other areas as needed.

My passion has always been to help others. I love spending time with my family, walking in the park, and
having movie nights. I also enjoy working with my Cricut machine creating shirts, mugs, cardboard
flowers and much more.

Hello Parents!

My name is Esmaylin Ramirez Feliz, and I was born in Dominican Republic, where I received my degree in Engineering. My mother worked in a Montessori school there, and when I learned about that philosophy, I fell in love with it. I knew that when I had my children, I wanted them to be educated in a Montessori school. I moved to the States in 2013.

My journey in Lumin started as a mom, in the Primary Program, and now working as a Parent Educator. Being a Parent Educator means so much to me because I know how important those early years are for the optimal development of a child’s life.

I live with my husband and two of my children. I’m an avid reader, and as a family, we enjoy outdoor activities, travelling to visit our extended family, and shopping for vintage treasures.

¡Hola padres!

I have been at Lumin for about a year now and completed the AMI 0-3 Assistants to Infancy certification from the Montessori Institute of North Texas in the Summer of 2023. I was born and raised in Houston and moved to Dallas in 2016 to be close to my daughter and grandchildren.  My granddaughter, Olivia, is a Lumin Alum which is how I was introduced to Lumin Education.  I have been with Lumin since 2019.

Never having worked in a school environment and around children, I’ve come to enjoy and appreciate all my different assignments, from childcare in ABC, subbing in classrooms, offering support in the administration office and accounting department to subbing in the nap room. I especially love the diversity of our students and teaching staff.  Watching three-year-olds grow with their different personalities, likes and dislikes, discovering the world little by little is a delight to watch.

Hello families,

My name is Jamie Thompson-Griffin. I live in Dallas with my husband and two cats. I have been a Lower Elementary Guide at Lumin Education for eight years.

In addition to completing my Montessori certification, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Education from Hope College, a Master of Education degree from University of Hartford, and  an Early Literacy Certificate from Southern Methodist University. I enjoy reading, listening to music, dancing and all other forms of exercise, and spending time outside! I also love learning more about nutrition and the human body, so I am working on completing a Nutrition and Healthy Living Certificate from eCornell.

I am looking forward to another wonderful school year, providing a nurturing environment where all students can pursue their interests and continue the big work of self-construction!

I have been a part of Lumin since 2005, when my son started in Primary. The next year I joined
as a Primary classroom assistant and after 5 years, I transferred to Parent Education for
pregnancy to age three.  I knew a little about this program because I had participated in it with
my youngest.

As the supervisor for Lumin’s East Dallas Home-Visiting program, I have the privilege of
overseeing a small group of talented parent educators. I am endorsed by the Texas
Association for Infant Mental Health as an Infant-Family Specialist and enjoy continued
learning as research helps us to better understand ways to support families.
I was born and raised in the Seattle area where I met my husband, Alex.  I moved to Dallas, his
hometown, in 1997.  We have three adult children, my youngest just recently graduated from
high school.  I enjoy listening to books, doing word puzzles, cooking, riding my bike and
working in my garden.

Me

I live in Dallas with my significant other who I have known for almost 20 years. We have a 7-year-old daughter Olivia who is a student at Lumin. This is my first year as an assistant art teacher but there is such a wonderful sense of community at Lumin that I have experienced as a parent of a student here, it feels like I already know the place well.

I have a bachelor's in fine art studies from the University of North Texas. I have taught art for the past 10 years in; schools, after school programs and in summer camps. I believe art in education is important not only because it allows for creativity, and expression but it promotes critical thinking, solving problems in many ways, and learning about diverse cultures.

My hobbies include drawing, and painting with watercolors. As a family some of our favorite things to do together are build legos, play board games, play video games, travel, explore museums and find fun events/festivals around the metroplex.

I enjoy a variety of hobbies, but my favorites are relaxing or cleaning while listening to music and my spare time is always spent with family and friends. In addition, I enjoy and look forward to gaining more education, knowledge, skills, and experiences with each challenge I face and I am excited about what’s instore for me to learn here at Lumin Education as a Parent Educator. Thus far, I’ve observed wonderful interactions between parents and children and hope to add my unique blend of tender love, care, and playfulness to the spirit of the children and families served here at Lumin and learn as much from them as I hope they will from me.

Hello parents, my name is Diana Aranda. I am originally from the state of Morelos in Mexico, but I have lived in Dallas for five years now. Throughout my professional life, I have focused on working in communities, helping to spread the importance of health prevention to the child population. I am a communications technician, with a degree in human nutrition and currently certified as a home visitor for EHS. In Mexico I worked for five years in the community with DIF as well as in the health caravans. I always focused on carrying out activities, games, talks, conferences, presentations, healthy cooking classes and even puppet theater for primary school children in rural communities in the state. My aim was to help them learn to take care of their health and train them as small promoters to help spread this knowledge to their families, and thus prevent diseases at the community level and then to the general population.
I have always felt inclined to work in order to help and leave a grain of sand in the community. I have been working at Lumin for almost two years and it makes me very happy to keep supporting children and their families in the development of their children. I continue to learn from each one of them and support them so that their children improve in their development and can reach their greatest potential. I am passionate about nature; I love being in contact with it whenever I can. I like to meditate, read, dance, travel, meet people and always learn a little about everything.

I am from the beautiful country of Costa Rica. Having been born and raised with a strong sense of family values, I understand the significance of a nurturing and supportive environment for the growth and development of children. This understanding has shaped my professional journey and my commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of fathers and families.
I am happily married to my loving wife, Priscilla, and we are proud parents to two wonderful daughters named Victoria and Olivia. Being a devoted husband and father has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and dedication towards creating a brighter future for my family and the community at large.
As the Fatherhood Specialist at Lumin Education, I have found a platform where I can channel my expertise and passion towards empowering and supporting fathers. With three years of invaluable experience at Lumin, I have become a trusted advocate for engaged and involved fatherhood. My role involves providing guidance, resources, and encouragement to fathers, helping them navigate the challenges and joys of parenthood.
Beyond my work at Lumin Education, I am an active member of the men's and fathers' group at my local church. Recognizing the importance of community support, I dedicate my time and efforts to help men in my community, offering guidance, mentorship, and a safe space for open discussions. I hope that my commitment to creating a strong network of supportive fathers can inspire those around me.
My journey as a fatherhood specialist and advocate for engaged fatherhood is far from over. I remain determined to make a lasting impact on fathers and families, creating a brighter and more inclusive future where every child has the support and love they deserve.

At an early age I realized my calling as a teacher and I was able to first begin teaching with my own children. I started my career in education working in the El Paso Independent School District for six years. I then volunteered for two years in the Head Start program which motivated me to go back to school where I graduated with an associate degree in Child development and Special Education.
I then began working for the Region XIX Head Start program as a teacher’s aide and then a teacher. While working, I enrolled at NMSU where I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Bilingual Early Childhood Education. In all I worked for Head Start for 21 years.
My husband and I moved to the city of Fort Worth over 10 years ago.  For five years I worked as a teacher at “Mi Escuelita” Head Start program in Dallas. Now I feel very fortunate to have found a program like Lumin Bachman Lake Community School, a place where I can continue my passion for teaching.  I have worked for five years at Lumin Bachman Lake as a Parent Educator.  Through my experience with my own children, I realized that the start and foundation of a child's education begins at home, and that their parents are their first teachers. I am so thankful that I found a program that is interested in empowering families and providing them with the tools to grow and guide their children to a great future.
Outside of work, I like to read and write poetry, watch suspense and horror movies. I love camping and my crazy dog, Teddy.

Hi, my name is Vero Perez. I am currently the Program Supervisor of the MIECHV home visiting program at Lumin Bachman Lake Community School.  I became part of the Lumin family in July 2012 as a Parent Educator and transitioned to Program Supervisor in September 2018. I specialize in Early Childhood Development, and I use that experience to best meet the development needs of the children in our program.
Jane Hull once said, “Guiding parents in knowing that at the end of day, the most overwhelming key to child’s success is the positive involvement of the parent”.  My time here at Lumin Education includes seeking the best for the children and guiding our parents to be the best parents for their children. I enjoy showing parents that the home is the child’s first school, and they are their child’s first teacher.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, every day I get to hear amazing stories of resilience, strength, and people overcoming adversity. We now get to enjoy them as independent adults while we wonder about and try to support the ups and downs of their own lives.

I am Charo Alarcón. Over the past 30 years, I’ve been part of the Lumin Family in many different capacities, from volunteer parent to toddler guide, parent educator, Early Head Start Montessori toddler classroom supervisor, head of school, and Montessori mentor.

I hold a Montessori Assistant to Infancy diploma from the Montessori Institute of Denver, and a Montessori Elementary diploma from the Center for Montessori Education. The last three decades of my Montessori career have taught me that to support children to reach their full potential, we must first support their parents. I am our Lumin parents’ biggest fan! Listening to parents sharing their parenting joys, successes, and challenges is a favorite part of my workday.

I am a firm believer in the power of mindfulness –which I’ve been practicing for almost as long as I’ve been practicing Montessori— as a helpful tool to fully enjoy the present moment and develop awareness of oneself, others, and our surroundings. I am an avid reader. I love to travel and experience different cultures, and on the weekends, you can find me and my husband looking for the next most wonderful vegan restaurant! 😊

Away from work, I enjoy being with my family, watching movies, cooking and baking, and traveling with my husband whenever I can.
